Dating back to the 1850s and once known as the Empress Elisabeth Railway, the Westbahn is one of the most important lines in Austria, serving as the main East-West trunk route across the country, and beyond to Germany and Switzerland.

The line has seen constant upgrades throughout its history, and more recent developments include some 20 km between Attnang-Puchheim and Wels being equipped with LZB for high speed operation. The line is host to regional and intercity passenger traffic, local trains call at stations across the whole length of the route, while intercity trains call only at Attnang-Puchheim.
