Laughing Machines had a goal of creating not just a world but a whole living and breathing Multiverse with its own established laws and rules. Our passion was to tell the story of this Multiverse through colors, composition and design.
Undungeon turned out to be a special project for all the members of our team. What began as an ambitious artistic vision, an evening hobby of a passionate group of gaming artists, gradually has grown to be a fully-realized open-world project. It has been a long road with a myriad of small victories and defeats, but the only thing no one has ever doubted is that the game should help elevate pixel art to the level of painting and other ancient fine arts.
There are four world-class artists on our team. Their titanic efforts included hand-crafting the environments and painstakingly designing/animating the characters frame by frame resulting in the signature visual style the game has today. Our inspirations include Jodorowskyβs Dune, old-school science fiction games like the original Fallout games, and modern pixel art instant classics, including Hyper Light Drifter and Children of Morta.
We want to thank everyone for all the support. Special thanks to our Kickstarter backers who have been with us through the darkest of times. Without you, there would be no Undungeon.
Some of the illustrations presented in this artbook have been used as promo materials.
