About the Game

Get to work in this Greyhound of a locomotive, unrivalled authenticity and unparalleled detail come together in the form of the the NZ Ja Class, lovingly crafted by NZTS Workshops for historic Midland Line duty!

Since it was built, the Midland Line has been of significant importance, being one of the highest trafficked routes since the 1920s. Potent steam power dominated in the line’s early years, but more and more powerful traction was always in demand. Following the Second World War, a most notable design would be built for New Zealand’s south island, the Ja Class.

A development on the previous J Class, the Ja Class was a 4-8-2 design which featured various improvements over the previous iteration. With a bark as strong as its bite, this Greyhound was able to haul the heaviest of trains, and earned a favourable reputation with those who operated them. Officially, the Ja Class has no recorded top speed, the limit on the network was 55mph, and no testing was done to see what the locomotive could achieve. Unofficially, daring drivers on express runs reportedly reached speeds in excess of 75mph.

The Class lasted until the 1970s, when steam was retired in New Zealand, but a handful of the fleet were able to survive into preservation, where they’ve happily been enjoying retirement both in static and heritage service.

NZTS Workshops’ Ja Class is second to none in Train Simulator, featuring an incredible level of detail and authentic steam simulation. Featuring clean and weathered variants, as well as the distinctive red passenger cars that trail behind it, the Ja Class is ready for service on a variety of duties along the scenic Midland Line!
