Scaredy Cat

Scaredy Cat is a short, emotional narrative adventure where you play as a young kitty trying to prove she’s brave enough to cross the darkest part of the forest to find a rare flower alone.

A journey that starts as a simple dare quickly becomes something deeper, as Kitty meets the inhabitants of the forest, explores strange new places, and slowly has to face the truth about herself.

What first seems like a simple trip through the forest soon takes Kitty much further than she expected. Along the way, she will meet unusual characters, help them with their problems, complete small quests, and discover new areas. Some encounters are funny, some are mysterious, and some may make Kitty question why she started this journey in the first place.

The game focuses mainly on story, exploration, and character interactions, with simple gameplay sections and minigames mixed throughout the journey.

Explore the Game World

Travel through multiple locations as Kitty makes her way further away from home! The further Kitty goes, the stranger things become... Some locations are simple to reach, while others may require a little more effort. Kitty is a cat, after all. Climbing things is part of the job.

Meet the Inhabitants

Kitty is not alone on her journey.

Throughout the game, you will meet different characters living around the forest and other areas of the world. Each one has their own personality, dialogue, and problems they may need some help with.

Talk to the characters you meet, complete small tasks for them, and learn more about the places Kitty is exploring! Some characters will help Kitty continue her journey, while others may send her somewhere completely unexpected.

The conversations range from silly and lighthearted to more serious moments as the story continues.

Complete Quests

During the adventure, Kitty will receive different quests that help guide her through the world: these can include talking to characters, finding specific places, helping someone with a problem, exploring a new area, or completing a small challenge.

The quests are designed to keep the game simple and easy to follow!

Jump, Climb and Explore

Some parts of the journey include simple platforming and parkour sections: jump across branches, climb through different environments, and find your way through areas that cannot always be reached by simply following the road!

The platforming is kept simple and is mainly used as another way to explore the world and move between locations.

About the Game

Scaredy Cat was originally created as part of a Summer Studies course at Kajaani University of Applied Sciences and developed by a small student team in just a few months.

The goal was to create a complete narrative game experience from beginning to end while learning more about game development, teamwork, game design, programming, art, and production along the way.

After the original release, we continued working on the game based on feedback from players, friends, playtests, and events.

Since then, the game has received many improvements and updates, including new and reworked quests, clearer navigation, additional dialogue, improved environments, updated menus and UI, gameplay changes, new tutorials, minigame improvements, bug fixes, lighting changes, audio improvements, and general polish throughout the game.

The project has grown quite a lot from the original version, but the main idea has stayed the same:

A small story about a little cat who wants to prove that she is brave!
