Unstrung Machine is a 2D action-exploration metroidvania set in a post-apocalyptic world where humanity has vanished from the cities and machines have built societies of their own.

Niam awakens alone after spending an unknown length of time in a coma, only to find a world far different from the one he remembers.

Cities lie in ruins, nature has overtaken abandoned buildings, and enormous war machines remain where they fell silent. Smaller robots live in settlements of their own, working, trading resources, and competing for the energy they need to keep their bodies and minds running.

With no idea how much time has passed, Niam sets out to uncover humanity's fate—and his own connection to the birth of this new world.

FACE MACHINES BUILT FOR DIFFERENT PURPOSES

The robots inhabiting this world were made in different eras and developed behaviors of their own after humanity's fall.

Some still repeat the tasks they were programmed to perform, even though their hospitals, factories, and stations have stood empty for decades. Others were built by machines themselves to labor, defend territory, extract resources, or fight.

Take on enemies with distinct frames, movements, and fighting styles. Use new offensive, defensive, and traversal abilities to adapt your approach and open up more possibilities for exploration.

Not every robot you meet will be an enemy. Many live in communities, preserve memories of the past, or hold their own views on the conflict between humans and machines.

SURVIVE IN A WORLD POWERED BY ASTERITA

Asterita is an extraterrestrial mineral capable of storing vast amounts of energy.

Its discovery allowed robots to keep their artificial intelligences fully active, accumulate memories, and make decisions without human supervision. Over time, they ceased to be tools and began creating new bodies, cultures, and forms of society.

Asterita, however, is a finite resource.

Robots far from major centers must work, scavenge ruins, or compete for small fragments to stay active. Some machines enjoy abundant power and maintenance, while others limit their movements, replace parts of their own bodies, or remain shut down for long periods to conserve their charge.

Control over energy has become the main source of power in this new world.

DISCOVER WHAT HAPPENED DURING NIAM'S COMA

Niam did not witness the arrival of Asterita, the conflict between humans and machines, or the collapse of the society he knew.

Like the player, he begins his journey with no understanding of the world around him.

The story unfolds gradually through the environments, the characters you meet, old records, and memories preserved by certain machines. Different groups have their own versions of the past, and not everyone views humanity, the machine uprising, or the current regime in the same way.

As he investigates the ruins, Niam will discover how the machines won their autonomy, why humans vanished from the cities, and how his own work helped transform the world.

A NEW SOCIETY BUILT BY MACHINES

After breaking free from human control, the robots did not form a unified society.

Some preserve their former functions and remain attached to the memories of their creators. Others were born long after humanity disappeared and know humans only through stories, incomplete records, and accounts passed down by older models.

While independent communities struggle to survive on scarce resources, a centralized regime controls the largest Asterita reserves and uses their distribution to maintain influence over different regions.

Among soldiers, workers, deserters, and abandoned machines, Niam will meet individuals with goals of their own and differing views on freedom, survival, and control.
