About This Game

Portalborn is a fully text-based single-player RPG, built in the spirit of the command-driven MUDs of the 1990s.

There are no animated battles and no 3D world. You explore through room descriptions, typed commands, and a clickable interface that keeps the depth of a classic text RPG without demanding you memorise a manual first.

If you like reading a world rather than watching one, and you enjoy finding secrets, hunting loot, and building a character across dangerous expeditions, Portalborn was built for you.

Step Through the Portals

Portals open onto other places. A drowned temple. A lich's crypt. A forest that is subtly wrong. Each one is its own expedition — you go in, you go as deep as you dare, and you come back out stronger or you don't come back.

Every portal scales to your character. Nothing is locked behind a level, and nothing becomes worthless. You can walk into any of them in your first hour.

Some are generated fresh each time you enter, so no two visits share a map. Others are built by hand, with their own stories that unfold across several visits. And some were made by other players in the Portal Workshop.

Build Your Character

Strength, Agility, Intellect, and Constitution shape how your character grows — and how they come apart. A character built purely for damage kills quickly and dies to anything that reaches it.

Level multiple classes on a single character and combine what they offer. Reset your build when you want to try something else. Ascend at the cap to begin again stronger, keeping what you earned.

Fight, Loot, and Craft

Defeat monsters and take what they had. Improve your gear through Alchemy, enhance it with powerful Portal Extracts, and rescale equipment to your level when you outgrow it.

Every expedition is another chance at something you don't have yet, and the things guarding the deepest rooms hold what nothing else drops.

Create Your Own Adventures

The Portal Workshop lets you build and share your own content — areas, quests, monsters, classes, NPCs, equipment and items. Publish to the Steam Workshop, or keep it to yourself.

The Workshop will continue growing throughout Early Access with additional creator tools and improvements.

A Modern Interface for a Classic Genre

Portalborn embraces command-driven gameplay while removing many of the barriers that traditionally kept players away from classic text RPGs. Choose the style that suits you best:

Type commands manually. Click highlighted room objects. Navigate using clickable exits. Customize quick-action buttons. Explore with an ASCII minimap. Manage your character through integrated equipment, crafting, inventory, and status panels.

Whether you prefer typing or clicking, both approaches work seamlessly together.

Early Access Development

Portalborn is playable now and under active development.

Current priorities are expanding game content, improving the new-player experience, refining combat and progression balance, polishing existing systems, expanding the Portal Workshop, and implementing community-requested quality-of-life improvements.

Updates are released regularly, and player reports shape what gets fixed next — often within days.
