The first President of the United States, George Washington, did not seek greatness; he was pulled to it. A planter and surveyor from Virginia, Washington gained a reputation for fortitude under fire in the French and Indian War, a reputation that led to his being placed at the head of the Continental Army in the Revolution. Outmanned and outgunned, Washington nevertheless managed to defeat the British and secure the freedom of the United States - but he could not rest. Called upon again to serve as President of the new republic, Washington remained a tireless advocate for unity, for individuals to put their party politics and personal interest aside and work together to make a more dignified, more orderly nation.
